			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mi è arrivato via e-mail un appello &#8220;per la libertà di ricerca e di insegnamento in Turchia&#8221;, proveniente da <a href="http://gititalia.wordpress.com/">GitItalia</a>: la sezione italiana di un&#8217;iniziativa nata in Francia, poi diffusa anche in Germania, Gran Bretagna, Grecia, Turchia stessa e Usa.</p>
<p>Io francamente condivido molto poco di questo appello: nel quale i fatti vengono selezionati in modo partigiano (solo quelli a favore della propria tesi), mescolati in modo maldestro, presentati in modo svincolato dalla realtà. </p>
<p>Ad esempio:<br />
<em>Le misure di repressione governativa e gli attacchi portati alla ricerca e all’insegnamento universitario in Turchia si sono intensificati dal 2009. Hanno raggiunto un livello allarmante con l’arresto, nell’ottobre del 2011, della professoressa e politologa Büşra Ersanlı, dell’università di Marmara, del direttore della prestigiosa casa editrice Belge, Ragıp Zarakolu, del dottorando in scienze politiche, editore e traduttore Deniz Zarakolu, o dello studente di scienze politiche ventunenne Büşra Beste Önder. Sono in carcere nel quadro delle «operazioni [anti] KCK», accusati di far parte del «Raggruppamento sociale del Kurdistan» che sarebbe a capo della ribellione armata curda del PKK</em></p>
<p>Ma cosa c&#8217;entrano la ricerca e l&#8217;insegnamento con le accuse mosse, che riguardano invece le attività politiche di queste persone? Nei fatti, in Turchia esiste un problema gigantesco, la repressione per l&#8217;appunto di attività politiche per mezzo di leggi anti-terrorismo illiberali e controproducenti: ma in galera sono finiti &#8211; per gli stessi identici motivi &#8211; molti politici e attivisti che con la ricerca e l&#8217;insegnamento non hanno nulla a che vedere (se ne parla in verità nel seguito dell&#8217;appello); non si può far confusione in questo modo! Perché inventarsi un problema che non c&#8217;è quando ne esiste uno reale? Non ci sarà mica sotto qualche ragione propagandistica anti-Akp?</p>
<p>E ancora:<br />
<em>Queste accuse hanno come obiettivo soltanto quello di mettere a tacere gli intellettuali indipendenti e di minacciare i ricercatori, gli universitari, gli studenti.</em></p>
<p>Ma chi l&#8217;ha stabilito? Io trovo davvero indegno di ricercatori universitari lanciare delle accuse del genere &#8211; di carattere eminentemente politico &#8211; senza riscontri oggettivi ed esclusivamente sulla base del proprio convincimento personale.</p>
<p>Ma non è finita:<br />
<em>Altri intellettuali liberali vengono arrestati perché pongono domande sulle azioni del governo, sul ruolo delle organizzazioni di sensibilizzazione religiosa, sulle pratiche dell’apparato statale.</em></p>
<p>E quali sarebbero questi &#8220;intellettuali arrestati perché pongono domande etc etc&#8221;? A me davvero NON risultano!</p>
<p>E in conclusione:<br />
<em>Il semplice fatto di studiare e dibattere concetti come “democrazia” e “diritti umani”, il semplice fatto di pubblicare delle opere sulla diversità culturale della società turca, sulle strutture dello Stato, sulla storia delle minoranze (incluso il genocidio degli armeni) può essere ormai utilizzato contro i loro autori e farli incarcerare in attesa di un interminabile processo.</em></p>
<p>Qui siamo alla leggenda nera, al ribaltamento della realtà: davvero un pessimo modo &#8211; quello di gettare fango a secchi &#8211; per aiutare la Turchia nel suo lento incedere verso la piena democrazia.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" title="bomba" src="http://carnegieendowment.org/images/article_images/turkey_bomb-1.jpg" alt="" width="208" height="260" />Segnalo un interessante saggio di Sinan Ülgen appena pubblicato nei <a href="http://carnegieeurope.eu/publications/?fa=47183&amp;lang=en">Carnegie Papers</a>. Riassumendo il riassunto: la Turchia basa la sua sicurezza sulla Nato e non ha nessuna intenzione di produrre armamenti nucleari, neanche come risposta alla possibile atomica iraniana; sta però lanciando un ambizioso programma nucleare per produrre energia (è pressoché totalmente dipendente da importazioni energetiche, che hanno un&#8217;incidenza dirompente sulla bilancia dei pagamenti), è contraria a restrizioni negli scambi di materiali sensibili.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" title="Tatavla" src="http://www.mymerhaba.com/en/images/4335.jpg" alt="" width="179" height="250" />The days before the Christian holy day Ash Wednesday used to be celebrated widely in Istanbul. In anticipation of the 40-day fast before Easter, crowds dressed in colorful costumes and masks used to come together for days of festivities where drinks were downed like water.</p>
<p>Old Greek-Orthodox community residing in Istanbul were used to organizing a three-day carnival called “Apokries” before the 40-day long “Great Fast”.</p>
<p>The carnival was beginning on the streets of Galata and Pera and people dressed in colorful costumes and masks were parading, dancing, and drinking. The festival was used to end at Tatavla (now Kurtulus district in Istanbul) with a great fair. Although led by the Greek Orthodox community, the celebrations were public and inter-communal and Istanbulites called this day “Bakla Horani” (literally, &#8220;I eat beans,&#8221; and eating beans is also a part of the ritual).</p>
<p>Following the carnival, the Greek-Orthodox community was spending their days with worshipping and fasting at home until Easter. The last public celebration of the carnival in Istanbul was held in 1941.</p>
<p>The 500-year old Tatavla Baklahorani Carnival will be celebrated in Istanbul on February 26, 2012. A crowd dressed in colorful traditional costumes and masts will parade from Galatasaray High School down to Istiklal Avenue at 20:00 and will reach Romeo &amp; Juliet music hall around 20:30.</p>
<p>Masks are the main element of Baklahorani, like Rio and Venice carnivals. The evening will also include music from a variety of traditional and modern groups from Istanbul including Tatavla Keyfi, a band specializing in century old Greek music.</p>
<p>Baklahorani is a celebration of culture and heritage that is open to every community. Don’t miss the most colorful historical festival of Istanbul.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" title="AKP" src="http://www.trdefence.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/akplogo.gif" alt="" width="180" height="175" />Ieri siamo stati al congresso dei giovani dell&#8217;Akp di Istanbul, che si è tenuto nel palazzetto dello sport in cui gioca abitualmente la squadra di basket del Galatasaray (a Yedikule, proprio di fronte alle mura di Teodosio): al quale avrebbe dovuto partecipare il primo ministro Erdoğan, alla prima uscita in pubblico dopo l&#8217;operazione &#8211; <a href="http://istanbulavrupa.wordpress.com/2012/02/11/2950/">la seconda in pochi mesi</a> &#8211; a cui è stato sottoposto qualche giorno fa. Siamo arrivati non particolarmente in orario, ad accoglierci abbiamo trovato &#8211; oltre alle gigantografie del premier e di Atatürk &#8211; un muro di folla; una volta all&#8217;interno, ho potuto osservare un interessante mix di <em>convention</em> all&#8217;americana coloratissima e dalla colonna sonora accattivante e invasiva, incoraggiamento di quelli che sembravano tifosi e non attivisti politici (un paio erano provvisti di tamburi, alcuni avevano le sciarpe della loro squadra del cuore), politici e delegati &#8216;in carriera&#8217; a partire dai dettagli di ciò che indossavano, semplici sostenitori &#8211; dall&#8217;abbigliamento, appartenenti alle classi popolari &#8211; trasportati lì da ogni angolo dalla città grazie a un capillare servizio di bus affittati dal partito, adulti e anche anziani esclusivamente curiosi di ascoltare il loro leader. Quindi la delusione è stata grande quando Erdoğan è sì comparso, ma in videoconferenza dalla sua residenza di Üsküdar sul Bosforo: il deflusso è cominciato immediatamente dopo.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft" title="asta" src="http://www.paulfrasercollectibles.com/upload/public/docimages/Image/o/q/v/Art%20of%20the%20Ottoman%20Empire%20plate410.jpg" alt="" width="246" height="231" />LONDON.- Sotheby’s announced its forthcoming sale of a private collection of Ottoman art, “An Eye for Opulence: Art of the Ottoman Empire”, which will take place on Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 during ‘Turkish and Islamic Week: Classical to Contemporary’. The single owner sale will comprise a broad selection of works across a variety of media, spanning more than four hundred years of Ottoman art from the 15th to the 19th century. In addition to Iznik ceramics, manuscripts, silverware, decorative arts and textiles, the sale will also include a number of European paintings and Turqueries, reflecting artistic exchanges between the Ottoman Empire and Europe, and the West’s fascination with the &#8216;exoticism&#8217; of the Ottoman court. Comprising 254 lots, this important private collection is estimated to realise in excess of £3.5 million.</p>
<p>Edward Gibbs, Senior Director and Head of Sotheby’s Middle East Department, said: The collection presented for sale is the result of over thirty years’ searching and selection on the part of its owner, whose enviable level of connoisseurship, gained from many years of studying the various forms of Ottoman art, is reflected in the mature and sophisticated array of objects, textiles and paintings to be offered. “An Eye for Opulence: Art of the Ottoman Empire” will present opportunities for both collectors of Ottoman art as well as those interested in great design and sumptuous decoration.</p>
<p><strong>The Ottoman Empire </strong><br />
Located at the crossroads of East and West, the Ottoman Empire absorbed a diverse range of influences, including Chinese, European and Persian, to produce a distinctive and coherent artistic language throughout a range of decorative arts. Ottoman expansion into Eastern Europe and subsequent access to the silver mines of the Balkans between the 14th and 16th centuries led to a rich and skilled tradition of Ottoman silverware; whilst the tiles, dishes and other ceramic objects made at Iznik in northwestern Anatolia have long been recognised as one of the greatest achievements of Ottoman art and even a significant moment in the history of world ceramics. In the later Ottoman period, the production of decorative arts continued to flourish with the introduction of both rococo and baroque elements signalling an increasingly open attitude to all things European in the 18th and 19th centuries.</p>
<p><strong>Orientalist Paintings </strong><br />
The collection of Orientalist paintings is rich in works from the 16th to 19th centuries, including topographical landscapes of Istanbul, genre scenes, and portraits of Ottoman notables.</p>
<p>Highlighting the auction will be a 17th century North Italian School profile portrait of Sultan Murad I (r.1359-89) &#8211; with an inscription noting his assassination &#8211; estimated at £150,000-200,000. Also included are two albums of drawings and watercolours by the Maltese artist Amadeo Preziosi: the first a travel album containing some forty-eight vignettes of his travels through Europe, from London to Constantinople, estimated at £120,000-180,000; the second with 35 lively, full-length portraits including Turkish, Arab, and Greek figures in colourful traditional dress, including soldiers, a scribe, and dervishes, estimated at £50,000-70,000.</p>
<p>Other works include a rare fragment of a 16th century vellum scroll, painted in tempera, depicting a procession of infantrymen and archers, probably escorting Sultan Murad III, estimated at £40,000-60,000, and two paintings attributed to Jean-Baptiste van Mour: A Turkish Woman with her Child (£30,000-50,000), and A Noblewoman Taking Coffee (estimate: £15,000-20,000).</p>
<p><strong>Further Auction Highlights </strong><br />
Also included in the sale is a Calligrapher’s Chest (Turkey, second half of the 16th century) which is estimated at £40,000 &#8211; 60,000, of rare design and quality.</p>
<p>The selection includes a rare Iznik Polychrome Dish Depicting a Peacock, circa 1580, similar to the celebrated Iznik dish in the Louvre, which carries an estimate of £30,000– 50,000.</p>
<p>A rare Ottoman Silver Tankard (Turkey, 16th century) carries an estimate of £100,000 – 150,000, and a Pair of Imperial Diamond-Mounted Mother-of-Pearl and Coral Spoons (Turkey, 18th/19th century) is estimated at £8,000 – 12,000.</p>
<p><strong>Textiles</strong><br />
The selection of textiles included within the collection represents all aspects of the woven and embroidered traditions of Ottoman textiles, from the 16th to the late 19th century. Examples include voided velvet yastik, embroidered quilt covers and bohca, delicate silk and metal-thread embroidered towels, and 16th and 17th-century brocades.</p>

E&#8217; chiuso da alcuni anni, i lavori di restauro decisi nell&#8217;ambito di Istanbul 2010 capitale europea della cultura (ne avevo parlato in un mio réportage sul Secolo) non sono mai partiti per ragioni burocratiche; ma finalmente dovremmo esserci: perché qualche gorno fa il ministro della cultura e turismo Ertuğrul Günay ha annunciato il sostegno di 30 milioni di lire turche (13-14 milioni di euro, non sono aggiornato sul tasso di cambio) da parte della Sabancı Holding, l&#8217;imminente pubblicazione del bando per assegnare i lavori, la riapertura solenne il 29 ottobre 2012 nel 90° anniversario della Repubblica. I privati al servizio della cultura, in cambio dell&#8217;intitolazione di alcune sale: altro che Della Valle e la sponsorizzazione del Colosseo!</p>

<p>Mi accostai a questo libro perché il titolo mi suscitava una forte curiosità, diciamo così, geografica. Kurtalan infatti è al giorno d&#8217;oggi un cittadina curda sita nella provincia di Siirt. Vagheggiavo un giallo (l&#8217;enigma del titolo) a sfondo “curdo”, che potesse fornire uno sguardo narrativo “straniero” alle terre su cui temporaneamente mi trovo a vivere. Così non fu. Mi ritrovai davanti uno sconnesso e poco entusiasmante giallo sulle correnti eretiche della Chiesa alto-medievale. Col cuore del racconto situato fra Montpellier e Parigi. Insomma un epigono sia del Nome della Rosa sia di Dan Brown.</p>
<p>Il professore di Storia del Cristianesimo dell&#8217;Università di Montpellier, Nicole Lanoux, misantropo, introverso, preparatissimo e abitudinario, sta normalmente introducendo i suoi studenti ai misteri delle numerosissime eresie che spaccarono la Chiesa nei primissimi secoli d.c., quando un caro amico da Parigi ne viene a disturbare la tranquillità. Da un antiquario è riuscito a recuperare un antico scrigno in oro contenente testi risalenti, così pare, all&#8217;undicesimo secolo e il cui contenuto potrebbe sconvolgere la Chiesa di Roma, la sua buona reputazione e la sua missione in terra. Lo scrigno, trafugato dalle orde di Genghis Khan dalla sperduta sede vescovile di Kurtalan, era giunto a Parigi dalla Cina. Nessuno se non Nicole Lanoux è in grado di decifrare i testi che lo scrigno contiene: furono infatti scritti sulla base di complessi codici per essere trasportati in gran segreto lungo le impervie strade dell&#8217;Anatolia per raggiungere, da Roma, proprio Kurtalan. Erano gli anni dello scisma d&#8217;oriente e delle crociate che devastavano Istanbul e depredavano i villaggi anatolici per aprirsi la via fino al San Sepolcro. La chiesa di Roma, che rivendicava di essere l&#8217;unica vera rappresentante delle messaggio evangelico, perdeva pian piano le diocesi orientali divenute “ortodosse” e con furbizia politica cercava di guadagnarsi almeno la sede di Kurtalan, estrema periferia della cristianità, per poter arginare e poi pian piano recuperare le diocesi eretiche, ortodosse e ariane. Questo è il nucleo dell&#8217; “enigma di Kurtalan”. Le poco avvincenti peripezie del protagonista che l&#8217;enigma scioglierà, si svolgono a Parigi fra osterie, conventi e taxi.</p>
<p>L&#8217;autore Lucera, evidentemente molto preparato sull&#8217;argomento, alterna a capitoli narrativi capitoli didascalici, sotto forma di lezione universitaria di Storia del Cristianesimo. È per tutti noi un ripasso di argomenti perduti, con buona probabilità, nell&#8217;uggia di mattinate invernali di terza liceo: sguardo alla finestra e grossi sbadigli. Giustappunto una rinfrescata non fa mai male. Solo che la puntigliosità con cui Lucera ci spiega le dinamiche di scontro fra eresie e ortodossie, non è compensata da una vena narrativa che possa dirsi tale e l&#8217;occasione del ripasso va sciupata a causa di una freddezza nozionistica eccessiva. L&#8217;altro filone narrativo, che assieme all&#8217;anticlericalismo (definizione frettolosa, s&#8217;intende) dell&#8217;autore, lascia emergere anche un suo collegamento emotivo alle lotte politiche sanguinose degli “anni di piombo”, è avviticchiato attorno alla figura di un esule italiano che per motivi di anonimato lavora in un convento parigino, proprio quello dove Lanoux svolge il suo lavoro di decifrazione. Un amore maturato fra i vialetti della Sapienza, un colpo politico andato male, la fuga verso la Francia e la ricerca spasmodica di lei&#8230;</p>
<p>Temi interessanti, non c&#8217;è che dire. E si dica pure che l&#8217;autore mostra di sentirli davvero, mostra di occupare più spesso che no i suoi pensieri con le problematiche politiche degli anni Settanta e con quella, si fa per dire, “eterna” del potere politico della Chiesa. Solo che il romanzo in questione, romanzo ancora non lo è. Una squadra di buoni editor potrebbero tirarne fuori qualcosa di commercialmente appetibile, sforbiciando, sfoltendo, riscrivendo dialoghi e soprattutto correggendo l&#8217;infinita sfilza di refusi (almeno più di un paio di centinaia) che infastidiscono l&#8217;occhio e talvolta addirittura falsano il significato. Sembra quindi più che altro un romanzo allo stato di bozza. E data la forma in cui si presenta mi sento di asternermi da qualsiasi tipo di giudizio nel merito dei contenuti. Qualcuno dice che pian piano la modalità “self-printing” cominicerà a far tremare le case editrici. È il primo self-printed libro che leggo. Se i risultati sono questi, di strada c&#8217;e n&#8217;è ancora molta, molta. Gli editori, seri, possono dormire sonni tranquilli.</p>

<p>GIUSEPPE OSVALDO LUCERA è nato a Biccari (Foggia) il 19 novembre 1947. Diplomato nel 1969. Ha lavorato nelle industrie alimentari e nella sanità privata. Cultore di storia risorgimentale. Ha pubblicato un saggio in quattro volumi sul fenomeno del brigantaggio: “Vicende di un’altra storia” ed un romanzo in due parti: “I due manutengoli”, editi dalle Edizioni Simple di Macerata. Ha pubblicato inoltre “Giuseppe Schiavone, brigante post-unitario”, edito da Biondi Editore.</p>

<p>This book provides a new way of understanding the role of the cult of the martyrs for the Cappadocian Fathers and their families. The study shows that the cult of the martyrs was so popular among all social levels of Christians, including the Cappadocian Fathers, that it formed the rudimentary framework for Christian piety in the fourth century. When Christianity became the state religion in 325, the fundamental presupposition of martyrdom as Christian identity became ambiguous. Thus it was paramount for the Cappadocians to preserve, evolve, and represent how martyr piety fit into the Christian life after the Constantinian settlement. The book reveals the Cappadocians&#8217; tireless promotion of martyr piety through careful expositions of the ritual of the panegyris and importance of the calendar, their pastoral teachings through panegyrics to the martyrs, and the triumphs and frustrations of building a martyrium. Limberis also demonstrates how the Cappadocians fixed the image of the martyrs on their families&#8217; identities forever, showing how the veneration of the martyrs contributed to practicing Christian faith in a familial context. The study demonstrates that the local martyr cults were so powerful that the Cappadocian Fathers promoted their own kin as martyrs, and claimed other martyrs as their ancestors. The study also engages how gender and theories of kinship complicate their texts, both for the Cappadocians and for us.</p>

Gli autori e dei loro ascari se la sono presa per un commento in cui il mostro veniva esplicitamente definito una &#8220;cagata&#8221; e per una mia innocua battuta sul rinfresco che verrà offerto all&#8217;inaugurazione dalla città metropolitana di Istanbul: visti i toni da ultimo highlander di qualche interlocutore &#8211; nonostante i miei ripetuti inviti al dialogo &#8211;  avevo chiuso i commenti e rimosso tutti quelli già pubblicati, dietro invito di Orazio Gianluca di Ecosistem sas ho rimosso anche la foto e i contenuti di cui detengono il copyright e che potrete trovare direttamente sul loro <a href="http://www.ilmostrodellalaguna.it/">sito web</a>. <p>The Institute for Social Sciences of Sakarya University is pleased to announce “1st Middle East International Congress: New Politics and Society” which will be held between 9 and 11 October, 2012 in Sakarya, Turkey. The Middle East is once again under spotlight thanks mainly to the Arab Awakening. The latter refers to a groundbreaking chain of events that require radical reworking not only in the Middle Eastern politics but also in the groves of academe, which have largely been caught off guard and oblivious of the new social dynamics of the region. This congress invites observers and students of the region to reconsider and rework not only the highly topical events of the day but also several related phenomena that include citizenry, political action, state building, democratic politics, social legitimacy of authority, social justice, social media, new political consciousness, national self-determination and the post 9/11 international politics of the Middle East. It is vital for the participants to consider that while Europe and the US needed several centuries to develop modern political governance and civil society, the challenge for the Middle Eastern peoples is to press on the means of democratic politics in a much shorter time frame and under perilous conditions. Sakarya University, Institute for Social Sciences invites scholars, public figures and activists of all stripes to join the panels and colloquiums for advancing our understanding of the new dynamics of the region. The language of the Congress will be English, Arabic and Turkish with simultaneous translations provided.</p>
<p>The Opening Speech will be delivered by H.E. Ahmet Davutoglu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey.</p>
<p>The Keynote Speech will be delivered by Prof. Norman Finkelstein.</p>

<p>The Armenian military forces committed genocide in Khojaly &#8211; in Nagorno-Karabakh  - on Feb.26, 1992. More than 600 people were killed, including 63 children, 106 women and 70 old men. Some 487 civilians were disabled during the genocide. In addition, 1,275 peaceful residents were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 remains unknown.</p>
<p>A photo exhibition marking the Khojaly genocide will be held in a central square in Istanbul on Feb.17-19.</p>
<p>The exhibition will be held within the campaign &#8220;Justice for Khojaly&#8221; with the support of Azerbaijani Students, the Alumni International Forum and the Youth Forum of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.</p>
<p>The exhibition will be deployed on the square and the Taksim metro station. Photographs presented at the exhibition are designed to depict the tragedy of the the town&#8217;s population. The town was erased from the face of the earth in the course of a single night, while hundreds were killed.</p>
<p>During the exhibition, residents and guests to Istanbul will receive thousands of books and booklets about this tragedy.</p>
<p>The exhibition will open at 10 am on Feb.17</p>

<p>Covering of Muslim women is often perceived as a sign of oppression in the Western eye. Nonetheless, there are a soaring number of women who choose to wear the Islamic headgear as a sign of their liberation and commitment to God. Although these women have long been of interest for the peoples of the Occident with endless material produced about them in the past, it was invariably through the monotonal voice of the Orientalist from a position of outside authority. Here the reader will hear, for a change, the insiders&#8217; voices from within the Orient, the voices of the contemporary Turkish women who cover, willingly and yes, decisively. Their day to day struggles in search for their niche in the secular Turkish society is intended to open a new window and provide an alternative perspective for the Western reader.</p>
