Pizza, lasagne, tiramisù. Italian sounding food is everywhere in Istanbul, but it often is Italian only in name; and even names, to tell the truth, may appear to the trained eye as bad imitations – misspelled in funny ways, as they are. You can also find tricolore products – the red-white-green of our national flag – in supermarkets, especially parmesan cheese (instead of parmigiano reggiano, the official and protected denomination) and mozzarella. But again, they are Italian only in the colors of their packaging, and they definitely taste different from the originals. So the question is: where should locals and expats go in order to have an authentic Italian experience?
